What is Travel Soccer?

Copley Fairlawn Athletic Association’s travel soccer program is referred to as the Copley Cosmos. We are affiliated with the Ohio Youth Soccer Association - North (OYSAN) and CASA -  US Club exist for the purpose of promoting the game of soccer at a competitive level commonly referred to as "Travel Soccer." Copley Cosmos Soccer is a community-based club drawing from the talent here in the Copley/Fairlawn School District.

Copley Cosmos Soccer teams are registered to play in the OHTSL(boys/girls) ,which are leagues consisting of Travel Soccer Clubs located in the Cleveland/Akron area.  Some community Travel Soccer teams that Copley plays are Medina, Brunswick, Revere, Wadsworth, Stow, and many others.

Who is eligible to play on a Copley Travel Team?

Anyone residing in the Copley/Fairlawn School District entering grades 2nd through 8th grade (upcoming year) is eligible to participate.  Out of community and younger athletes may be placed on a team with the approval of the Club.  Teams are selected on an evaluation basis.  Evaluations are conducted once a year usually the first week of June.  Teams are then formed from these evaluations for the upcoming Fall and Spring Sessions.  Typically teams are formed by age group, however sometimes age groups are combined in order to allow more kids to participate.

When do Travel Teams Play?

Copley Cosmos Travel teams participate in the outdoor travel leagues - the Fall season is from late August through October, and the Spring season runs mid-April until early-June.  The outdoor seasons consist of 8-games each season, with usually  4-home and 4-away games.  The outdoor games are usually scheduled for Saturday or Sunday afternoons, although an occasional week night game may be scheduled.  Outdoor home games are played at various fields throughout Copley.

How much does it cost?

Players are required to pay for each season/session.  Currently fees are $150.00 per season/session (subject to change). Additional charges are generally required for tournament play and additional indoor training time as needed.

Players are also required to purchase a uniform.  The current uniform cost around $90.00 (separate from registration fee).  The uniform consists of a home jersey, away jersey, practice shirt, shorts and socks.

Who are the coaches and when do teams practice?

Each team has one head coach and one or two assistants.  Although some teams have non-parent coaches, most teams are coached by a parent with soccer experience.  These coaches volunteer their time, and all are required to attend a USSF coaching class and earn a coaching license.  The entire coaching staff consists of licensed coaches (sanctioned through the OYSAN or US Club ).  Each coach sets up their own practice sessions which will vary from season to season.  Teams typically practice two weeknights each week during the fall & spring.   Parents interested in coaching need to contact the CAA Director of Soccer or the Copley Cosmos Director.

Who runs the Evaluations?

The evaluations are organized by the club, and facilitated by current Copley Cosmos Soccer Coaches, with assistance from the Copley High School coaching staff.

Does my son/daughter have to play all year?

Serious youth soccer players who have aspirations of playing at the high school level will participate on their local travel team and possibly play for a premier club throughout the year.  While it is not mandatory that a player commit to an entire year, and Copley Cosmos does not require that a player sign a commitment contract as some communities do, we do ask that you consider the level of commitment required, and the detriment to the team should your son/daughter leave the team during the middle of the year.

Is it reasonable that we can do other things during the year?

Absolutely!  Most travel soccer players are multi-sport athletes, and also play football/volleyball in the fall and play baseball/softball in the spring.  While conflicts do occur, they are typically minimal and can be resolved by coordinating with the coaches.

More about youth soccer

Youth soccer in the U.S. consists of four primary levels of play.

Recreational Soccer is designed within communities to allow an opportunity for all children who are interested to learn and play the game, regardless of skill and experience.  This is where soccer is first introduced to a young soccer player and the intent is to provide a fun and educational environment.

Travel Soccer is still a community-based level of play, and players are selected through open evaluations.  While any player within a given community may try out for that community's travel soccer teams, there is a maximum number of players that can be rostered on any given team and thus only a certain number of players can be selected.  Annual Evaluations are conducted to permit existing and new players the opportunity to be evaluated and selected to these travel teams.  Copley Cosmos Travel Soccer teams play in Travel Soccer Leagues (OHTSL) within the greater Akron/Cleveland area.

Premier Soccer is a very competitive level of soccer that involves a greater time and financial commitment.  Very skilled soccer players from communities all over the NE Ohio region may try out for these premier soccer teams which are part of larger soccer clubs, some of which are managed and coached by former professional and world-class soccer players.  The very successful high school soccer programs in this area have rosters made up mostly of players that have premier soccer experience.
